GOES-R transition from GOES Variable Format (GVAR) to GOES Rebroadcast Data
217D (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)
In the GOES-R series timeframe, geostationary instrument data rates will increase by orders of magnitude over current instruments, requiring major changes in the direct broadcast known as the GOES Variable Format (GVAR). The GOES-R Program Office (GPO) is considering two types of distribution to replace GVAR; the full set of Level 1b products (GFUL) and a rebroadcast of a subset of this data (GRB). GFUL will contain the full ABI, HES, and other instruments Level 1b data sets, providing a data rate of more than 100 Mbps. The content of GRB has not been defined. This poster provides an overview of the requirements for GRB/GFUL implementation; e.g., broadcast in the 1683-1695 MHz (L band) range, and describes the GPO plans for transitioning the direct readout community from GVAR to GRB/GFUL; e.g., availability of GVAR for a period of time after GOES-R is operational and availability of a prototype GRB ground station design to support industry development. This includes using the GOES-N satellite series to provide a short-term capability to transmit a GVAR-like data rebroadcast of GOES-R data for users that may not be able to upgrade to the GRB data receivers initially in the GOES-R timeframe.
