The NCEP global 3d-var grid point statistical interpolation analysis system(GSI) has been modified to include variational quality control. This variational quality control replaces an external optimal interpolation quality control (OIQC) procedure. The presentation will include details of the variational quality control procedure and the procedures for determining the variational quality control parameters based on statistics of differences between observations and forecasts. Also presented will be comparisons of the rejected data for the variational quality control and the OIQC and impacts on the forecasts. The results will show that the variational quality control improves analyses and forecasts.
