MODIS infrared channel spectral response function calibration with co-located AIRS observation

MODIS is one of the key remote sensing instruments onboard the AQUA and Terra Satellites. MODIS has 36 channels covering the spectral regions from visible, shortwave infrared and far infrared area. The calibration of MODIS includes both a pre-launch calibration and an on-orbit calibration. For the visible and the shortwave infrared channels, the SpMA (Spectral Measurement Assembly) is applied to perform the on orbit spectral response monitoring, but for the infrared channels (channel 20-36), there is no way to monitor the instrument spectral sensitivity. Recent research using MODIS observation pointing data show that there may be different instrument spectral response function shifts in these 16 infrared channels. In this paper, an observation data based algorithm is developed to retrieve the on-orbit MODIS spectral response function with co-located AIRS high spectral resolution observation data. The limitation and bias of the retrieval is also presented.
