Culture Change is Underway: WAS*IS (Weather and Society - Integrated Studies) Progress Report
206A (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)
Weather and Society * Integrated Studies (WAS*IS) is a grassroots movement to build an interdisciplinary community of researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders who realize the value of an integrated weather and social science enterprise and who are dedicated to making social science an integral part of meteorological research and applications throughout their careers. WAS*IS aims to change change our culture from what WAS to what IS the future of integrated weather studies. Several WAS*IS workshops were held in 2005-2006 in Boulder, Colorado, and Norman, Oklahoma--in which over 85 people have participated. The workshops are devoted to helping participants address challenges and develop new ideas and methodologies for effective socio-economic applications; to teaching necessary knowledge, skills, and tools with an emphasis on communication strategies and evaluation techniques; and to building strong, productive collaborations among the group. By emphasizing the importance of developing a life-long cohort as well as learning social-science tools and concepts, there is potential for recognizing and addressing societal impacts in a real, sustained way. The WAS*IS webpage can be viewed at . This presentation will highlight accomplishments and proposed projects of WAS*IS participants and provide an update of ongoing collaborative activities.
