Effectively Managing American Airline's High-Latitude, Long-Range Operations
210A (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)
Ray Howland, American Airlines, Fort Worth, TX
Polar airline operations are very demanding, and space weather is a key element in determining the optimal route for air traffic there. The continued expansion of the North America -- Asia market makes better understanding of all of the conditions that impact the decisions made by flight dispatchers even more important. At Continental Airlines, we use the best information and forecasts of space weather conditions as an input to pre-flight planning and in-flight decision making. This presentation highlights some of the big issues dispatchers must consider, for safe and efficient transit over the pole, where space weather impacts can be the most acute.
