Public and private sector roles in weather
Richard Heuwinkel, FAA, Washington, DC; and K. Johnston
While the private sector has long been a consumer of aviation weather information, the government has been a dominant provider. Even commercial weather services which provide unique, value-added products generally base them on information which originates with the government. Concepts being developed for the Next Generation Air Transportation System have led to the government and private sector roles being re-examined. An interagency policy team within the Joint Planning and Development Office Weather Working Group is considering the options for a broader private sector role. This paper presents the progress of the policy team.
