Lessons learned from Katrina - diabetes preparations before the next storm

Peggy B. Bourgeois, Southeast Association of Diabetes Educators (S'eLADE), Baton Rouge, LA

There may never be another storm like Katrina, but we cannot count on that. Diabetes educators lost their homes, employment, moved away and came back home rebuild and assist their patients with diabetes and emotional care.

What did we learn? Some had to set goals other than teaching patients about diabetes such as working in the scholastic arena or working with the Louisiana State Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health, Center for Community Preparedness to participate in Medical Special Needs Shelter training and participate in developing protocols for patients with diabetes.

Getting the information to the public and other diabetes educators throughout the state with the desire to never have to use it but be ready in case disaster comes our way, again.
