Man-li Wu, NASA/GSFC, Greenbelt, MD; and S. Schubert, O. Reale, M. Suarez, R. D. Koster, and P. Pegion
Using the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office global atmosphere general circulation model, a number of mechanistic experiments are being carried out to assess the controls of the surface temperature gradient over West Africa. The role of soil moisture feedbacks, vegetation , and orography on the surface temperature gradient and its consequent effect on the African Easterly Jet and Waves as well as on West Africa monsoons will be discussed.
