Aviation Team of the Mid-South
James W. Duke, James Duke Meteorology, Memphis, TN; and S. D. Boyette
ATOMS — Acronym for the ‘Aviation Team of the Mid-South'. ATOMS is a partnership between private and government aviation interests aimed at enhancing flight safety. Federal agencies involved include the two National Weather Service offices in greater Memphis (WFO and CWSU), and the FAA Flight Standards District Office in Memphis. Private members include airline pilots, highly experienced private pilots, and private sector meteorologists involved in aviation weather. The goal of ATOMS is to promote aviation safety through outreach to pilots. ATOMS weather safety presentations put general aviation pilots in touch with a diverse set of the aviation field, including private-sector and NWS forecasters, FAA safety officials and air traffic controllers, airline and commercial pilots, and consulting meteorologists. The expectation is that ATOMS outreach efforts will lower accident rates where weather is a factor and bring an overall better understanding between the aviation user community and service providers.
