Intercomparison of land surface process scheme in a global model: The single-column tests and seasonal prediction

This study evaluates the land-atmosphere interaction using various land surface models (LSMs). Selected schemes are the Oregon State University (OSU) LSM, Noah LSM, and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) LSM. To investigate the characteristics of the land surface process, two types of comparison methods are employed in this study: 1) preliminary evaluation using a single column (SCM), 2) examination of the simulated results using a global climate model (GCM). Both models are the components of the YOnsei University Research model System (YOURS). The SCM is forced by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) over the Southern Great Plains data. The results with the GCM based on the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) global spectral model with the Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS) boundary forcing are compared to those from the SCM data.
