On-line education activities and opportunities
Margaret Mooney, CIMSS/Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, WI; and S. Ackerman, T. Whittaker, and L. Avila
This presentation will highlight interactive on-line activities developed at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. CIMSS has been on the forefront of educational software design for over two decades, routinely integrating on-line activities into satellite remote sensing courses and workshops. More information is available at
http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/education/
In 2007 CIMSS collaborated with education experts and researchers from the University of Washington to create an NSF-funded distance learning course for science teachers. Satellite Applications for Geoscience Education (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/sage/) debuted in the fall and
featured several lectures via VISITview, an on-line delivery tool that facilitates real-time teaching and discussion sessions.
Leveraging off the NSF course, CIMSS received funding from the UW-Madison to develop an on-line course on Global and Regional Climate Change which will be available summer semester 2008. Plans for this course include new climate change applets developed collaboratively with the Why Files virtual science team. (http://whyfiles.org/interactives/)
To ensure that course curriculum meets the needs of science teachers, development on both courses began with a curriculum design summit that brought master teachers, scientists and web developers together to craft
the new course outlines. Information about the summits, on-line activities and educator stipends to evaluate the new climate course will be presented during this AMS session.
