Symposium on Recent Developments in Atmospheric Applications of Radar and Lidar

P2.16

Vortical hot towers observed by NASA's ER-2 Doppler radar (EDOP)

Stephen R. Guimond, COAPS/Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL; and G. M. Heymsfield

A conglomeration of EDOP observations during various tropical cyclone (TC) field experiments is presented. The focus of this paper is on properties (radial/vertical velocities and microphysics) of rapidly rotating, deep convective clouds termed "vortical hot towers". The ultra fine resolution of EDOP reveals never before seen wind structures within vortical hot towers that may help to explain rapid intensification episodes within TCs.
