Online Lab Science Course: Meeting the needs of a non-traditional student

James E. Edson Jr., Univ. of Arkansas, Monticello, AR

Online Weather Studies has been taught on our campus since the spring of 2004. We have maintained a steady enrollment of 20 each semester that it has been offered. The course usually fills the first or second day of the pre-registration period. It has served the non-traditional student's need for a lab course when they are unable to take classes during the normal 8:00 – 4:30 classroom setting. All of the completed exercises are submitted in one of three ways; email, FAX, or hand delivery. The tests are taken in the evening on-campus, or at an off-campus approved testing center.

Beginning with the spring semester of 2008, we will be offering the AMS online Oceanography course using the same format as we are now using with our online weather studies course.
