There have been several recent studies documenting the impact of satellite measurements of polar winds on global forecasting. Polar wind measurements from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites has had positive impacts on 6-hour polar wind forecasts and the 3- to 5-day wind forecasts in mid-latitudes. This presentation will provide estimates of the magnitude of economic benefits from these measurements to aviation polar route planning and for hurricane tracking and evacuations. Also presented are potential economic benefits to wind power production operations due to improved short-term forecasts using expected higher accuracy wind products from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) – R series.
