Next generation weather, aircraft surveillance and border security requires an integrated operational picture to enhance decision making. Lockheed Martin has formed a research team to address this issue. One of the methods by which this team is addressing the need is through the expansion of National Weather Radar Testbed (NWRT). Research and Development (R&D) activities will include next generation high resolution, ultra fast, simultaneous 3D display capability linked to cutting-edge technology resources such as Phased Array Radar, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and Light Detection and Ranging Radar (LIDAR). The use of this 3D display data will greatly enhance the following operational challenges:
• Increase Warning Time for Hazardous Weather
• Improve Detection of Tornados
• Improve Aviation Weather forecasts
• Provide skin track backup to ADS-B
• Detection of non-cooperative targets and
• Unmanned Aerial Systems Management
This paper will summarize technology activities within various government agencies involved in establishing this capability. These agencies include: Department of Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Specialized visualization technology from Lockheed Martin (Visualization Integration Console -VIC) has been leveraged to address the operational needs of these multi-agency users. The added capability that visualization technology brings to weather, transportation and security concerns across the nation will also be addressed. The economic benefits of this capability are substantial and will be reviewed in this presentation.
