Since launched in 1975 through a partnership of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning and NOAA, the Jackson State University Meteorology Program (JSUMP) has played an important role in the training of underrepresented minorities for careers in the atmospheric sciences. In recent years, approximately 25% of all bachelors degrees awarded to African-Americans in meteorology/atmospheric science are from Jackson State. We will survey the impact of JSUMP alumni, growth of capabilities, evolution of curriculum, involvement in research projects, and partnership activities. Challenges and future directions will also be discussed, within the context of the nationwide expansion of opportunities for meteorological education of underrepresented minorities.
