Tropical Cyclone Applications of NPOESS Soundings
Exhibit Hall B (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
NPOESS will include advanced microwave and infrared sounding capabilities, which will provide vertical temperature and moisture retrievals with higher vertical and spatial resolution than are available from current generation sounders. Proxy NPOESS soundings from AIRS and AMSU will be used to develop prototype applications for the analysis and forecasting of tropical cyclones. These applications include the evaluation of the moisture structure in the storm environment for short range intensity forecasting, the use of hurricane eye soundings for intensity monitoring, and the use of the temperature gradients for storm structure evaluation. Examples of each of these applications will be shown using the proxy data. The use of soundings from MetOp for tropical cyclone applications will also be described. . The accuracy of the satellite soundings in tropical cyclone environments will also be evaluated by comparison with in situ measurements from hurricane reconnaissance missions.
