Peter V. Hobbs and his group at the University of Washington carried out benchmark cloud seeding experiments, published critiques of cloud seeding experiments, and reanalyzed six apparently successful cloud seeding experiments and found compromising flaws in each.

In the domain of inadvertent weather modification, he and his group were the first to document the inadvertent production of high concentrations of ice particles by aircraft in supercooled clouds at temperatures above -15¢ªC, a phenomenon that strongly resembled deliberate cloud seeding.

As a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Peter Hobbs also helped form assessments of the scientific status of cloud seeding, and offered several of his own views on the field.

Peter Hobbs and the author received a monetary prize from the World Meteorological Organization in 2006 for Achievements in Weather Modification partly for some of the work summarized here.
