Improving Operational Aerosol Forecasting through Assimilation of Satellite-based Observations andAdvances in Numerical Model Components: Status and Progress
220 (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
John N. McHenry, Baron Advanced Meteorological Systems, LLC, Raleigh, NC; and R. Husar, C. Hsu, C. J. Coats Jr., M. J. Jeong, J. Warner, and S. Datta
Baron Advanced Meterological Systems is the leading provider

of operational air quality forecasts including both ozone and

particulates across the entire continental US at a variety of

scales. Recently, BAMS was awarded a NASA cooperative agreement

to infuse its existing operational decision support systems

with advanced, remotely-sensed measurements of aerosols and other

atmospheric trace gas constituents from the MODIS and AURA platforms,

as well as to concurrently improve a variety of modeling system

components including the land-surface, emissions, meteorological,

and photochemical modeling sub-systems, including clouds and

relative humidity. In this talk, PI McHenry will provide an

overview of the project, the status of progress, and near-term

plans.
