Weather Break: a broadcast skills enhancing program for students
Exhibit Hall B (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
Since its first episode aired on Jan 29th, 2007, Weather Break, a radio show produced by the students and faculty of Creighton University, has proven to be a very beneficial program. This radio show, produced for KINI-FM in St. Francis, SD, provides all departmental students a real broadcast experience in which they have the opportunity to enhance their communication skills. The cumulative effort results in a total of five shows per week where students improve on-air speaking skills, editing skills, learn to work with deadlines, and within the show's time limits. This departmental effort provides a networking component where contacts are made with meteorologists or other professionals in related fields who can provide input on the show's topic. Weather Break also provides research opportunities where topics covered only briefly in classes are researched in order to produce the show. All topics serve an outreach and education purpose. Weather Break has proven to be a good resume builder and preparation for a broadcast career.
