Characteristics of warm season TRMM Precipitation Features over the eastern China

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR), TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI), Visible and Infrared (VIRS), and Lighting Imaging Sensor (LIS) observations within the Precipitation Feature (PF) database have been analyzed to investigate precipitation characteristics during warm season (May to September) and to compare among three sub-regions at the eastern China. An event-based method is used to analyze the ten-year (1998-2007) multiple satellite observations, with a focus on the population, rain contribution, and convective intensity of the PFs, as well as diurnal variations in these precipitation characteristics. Moreover, convective intensity of the PFs at the eastern China is compared with that of the PFs over global continents. Distinct differences and similarities are found in various aspects of the precipitation characteristics among the sub-regions of the eastern China. Discussions are made to link the precipitation characteristics to features of regional topography and dynamical circulations.
