Water and air are two fluids with different caracteristics but with analog behaviours. Atmosphere forecast is more advanced for multiple reasons : men live on earth, observation is easier...

Nevertheless oceanography is improving , more and more models are operational, satellite observation is improving...

In 2006, the French marine hydrographic and oceanographic service (SHOM) has asked Meteo-France to develop facilities to support ocean analysis into its operational forecaster tool Synergie. This system is improved since 15 years to integrate more and more meteorological knowledge and business. The aim for the SHOM was to benefit from Meteo-France knowhow to handle multidimensionnal realtime and operational data into an integrated ergonomic tool.

Handling meteorology and oceanography into one unique tool might open interesting prospects : this tool is now ready to become operational with a configuration called SYNERGIE-METOC.
