Thermosphere and Ionosphere Variability due to Quasi-Two-Day Wave

Short-term variability in the thermosphere and ionosphere can be driven by meteorological perturbations such as planetary waves. This may explain some of the observed periods of 2 days and 5 days in ionospheric perturbations. The mechanism of this driving, however, is not yet well understood. Recent simulations using the NCAR TIME-GCM with specified quasi-two-day wave reveal significant variation in peak electron density. We will present detailed analysis of the dynamics and electrodynamics in the lower and upper atmosphere inovolved in this process. The quasi-two-day wave has very clear seasonal dependence, and its implication for the thermospheric and ionospheric variability is explored.
