World—wide lightning location network: improvements in global detection efficiency and estimated stroke energy

The World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) provides global real-time lightning locations for the strongest lightning strokes by measuring the very low frequency (VLF) radiation emanating from lightning discharges. Continuing improvements of the WWLLN and further investigation into global detection efficiency and estimated energy radiated by WWLLN-detected lightning strokes make this network even more valuable to global lightning research. We present the most recent detection efficiency estimates based on an improved location algorithm recently implemented in the WWLLN network. We also present initial results of estimated radiated stroke energy for WWLLN-detected lightning strokes that utilize the integrated VLF lightning energy at individual WWLLN stations.
