MRI new land surface model HAL and the impacts on global climate

MRI (Meteorological Research Institute, Japan) develops a new land surface model "HAL", which will be used for climate research and weather forecast. For climate research purposes, it will be implemented in an earth system model and a 20km-mesh AGCM. For weather forecast purposes, it will be implemented in global and regional weather forecast models. HAL consists of some submodels; a SiB type vegetation submodel, a lake submodel, an urban canopy submodel (plan), some snow submodels, and some soil submodels. HAL works as a mosaic LSM in AGCMs by using the submodels. A soil submodel has almost 20 soil layers, and it can simulate the appropriate diurnal cycle of top soil layers, and it enables the appropriate expression of the climate changes in frozen soil. HAL is also used as an offline land surface model, and is used to investigate which and how climate models work well.
