Preliminary Demonstration of FY-3 Satellite Products and Applications

The successful launch of FengYun-3A (FY-3A) satellite on May 28, 2008 is remarkable in Chinese meteorological history. FY series has evolved from single instrumentation in its first generation of the polar-orbiting system to an advanced and multi-sensor platform that measures a suite of the Earth's atmospheric and environmental parameters for broader applications. FY-3A carries a total of 11 instruments including Visible and InfraRed Radiometer, InfraRed Atmospheric Sounder (IRAS), MicroWave Temperature Sounder (MWTS), MicroWave Humidity Sounder (MWHS), MEdium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI), Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Sounder (SBUS), Total Ozone Unit (TOU), MicroWave Radiation Imager (MWRI), Solar Irradiation Monitor (SIM), Earth Radiation Measurement (ERM), and Space Environment Monitor (SEM). Several of these instruments will provide vital information on atmospheric temperature and water vapor profiles that can be assimilated directly into numerical weather prediction models. FY-3A is an research and operational satellite and will provide an operational constellation to the current NOAA and Metop-A satellites as well as the future NPOESS and MetOp systems because of its continual advance in its instrumentation and operational requirements. Several instruments such as MERSI, MWRI, SIM, and ERM are unique in FY-3A and there are no similar ones on NOAA and MetOp-A satellites. This study will present FY-3A instrument calibration, data quality, products and their applications.
