Exploration of Meteorology and Oceanography Data for Climate Monitoring and Studies through Giovanni

A large volume of satellite and model meteorology and oceanography climate data are available at Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). In addition to traditional data search and downloading services, many of these climate dataset have been integrated to a Web-based visualization and analysis system, the Goddard Interactive Online Visualization ANd aNalysis Infrastructure (Giovanni). Giovanni provides a simple way to visualize and analyze vast amounts of Earth science data without having to download the data. The system features popular visualizations such as latitude-longitude maps, animations, cross sections, profiles, time series, etc. and some basic statistical analysis functions such as scatter plots with statistics, correlation coefficient maps, difference plots, and plot overlays. Users are able to download results in several different formats including ASCII, HDF, and netCDF; and images in GoogleEarth (KMZ files). More display and analysis functions are under development. Currently, there are fifteen Giovanni instances, each targeting different user communities, with data from more than ten satellite instruments and models. Giovanni makes it easy to create a customized instance with desired data from different sensors or models for doing inter-comparisons or studying relationships. This presentation will demonstrate Giovanni's functions and features through sample applications focusing on climate monitoring and studies. For example, ENSO related SST and chlorophyll a concentration (chl a) features and chl a seasonal variations in the northern South China Sea; seasonal and interannual variations of precipitation over Asia monsoon regions; and aerosol and air quality changes. We are working on a new instance of Giovanni for MERRA model data, a dataset that will have about 30 years of climate model data from NASA GMAO MERRA project.
