The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) will be responsible for the long-term preservation of the meteorological GOES-R series data and products to be generated by the GOES-R series Ground Segment (GS). The GOES-R GS will generate and distribute Level 0 and 1b data, and wide variety of higher level data products (Level 2+) from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) to the NCDC for archiving. These archived data and products will provide critical support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Strategic Goals while serving the broad GOES-R series user community. The GOES-R series data and products will begin with the first launch, scheduled for FY2015, and continue through the life of the GOES-R program. In preparation, the NCDC is implementing the "NOAA Procedure for Scientific Records Appraisal and Archive Approval" to identify what GOES-R series data and products will be archived. This new NOAA-wide procedure provides a formal documented process that identifies and appraises a record in order to determine its archive value before approving a record for retention in a NOAA Data Center. The needs and impacts of any potential GOES-R series data and product user from U.S. federal agencies, private industry, the public and foreign governments will be considered in this process. User feedback is solicited for the future archive of GOES-R series data and products.
