Fourth Conference on the Meteorological Applications of Lightning Data

P2.12

Tropical frequency and distribution of lightning based on 10 years of observations from space by the Lightning Image Sensor (LIS)

Rachel I. Albrecht, Univ. of Maryland, College Park, MD; and S. Goodman, D. E. Buechler, and T. Chronis

Lightning measurements acquired by the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) onboard of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite provides the distribution and variability of total lightning (i.e., cloud-to-ground and intracloud) along the tropical region of the globe (between ±35 degrees in latitude). Ten years of LIS data (1998-2008) are processed and analyzed to construct a 0.25 and 0.10 degree spatial resolution reanalysis. This higher resolution reanalysis will provide a better understanding and identification of the mean lightning annual maxima regions over the tropics.
