Naval Research Laboratory global model adaptive observing during T-PARC/TCS-08

In support of the THORPEX Pacific Asian Regional Campaign (T-PARC) and the ONR Tropical Cyclone Structure-08 (TCS-08) experiments, adaptive observing guidance for tropical cyclones will have been provided from a number of operational, academic and research institutions all over the world. At the Naval Research Laboratory, large-scale guidance is produced twice daily using singular vectors (SVs) from the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) for fixed regions centered over Guam, Taiwan, Japan, and two regions over the North Pacific east of Japan. Ideally, guidance is available for tropical cyclones that form and travel within these regions, from genesis to recuvature and extratropical transition. The characteristics of the NOGAPS SVs, such as preferred altitudes, comparison of wind field to temperature field sensitivity, and the impact of lead time, will be summarized, and the implications for observing system design will be discussed. It is anticipated that preliminary data-denial experiment results will be presented.
