Recent WF_ABBA fire detection and characterization algorithm validation efforts at CIMSS

Several validation efforts are underway at CIMSS (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) to enhance the current version of the WF_ABBA (Wild Fire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm) and to prepare fire detection and characterization techniques for the launch of future satellites such as GOES-R ABI (Advanced Baseline Imager). Active fire detection and characterization from geostationary satellites provides the hazard mapping user community with hotspot detection and characterization in near real-time. In addition fire products are used in emissions modeling, air quality applications, and land use / land change applications. Fire product development at CIMSS focuses on active fire detection and sub pixel characterization including analysis of FRP (fire radiative power) and the calculation of fire size and temperature. Product improvement efforts involve inter-comparison of the WF_ABBA fire product with other satellite fire products such as MODIS, collaboration with CIRA (Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere) on the development and application of modeled ABI resolution fire data, and case study analysis of fire detection and characterization from scenes of MODIS data re-mapped to ABI's resolution and projection. Additional research efforts have focused on improvements in surface emissivity determination, atmospheric attenuation correction, and correction for solar radiance contamination in the 4 micron band.
