25th Conference on International Interactive Information and Processing Systems (IIPS) for Meteorology, Oceanography, and Hydrology

6B.1

A community supported, Internet-based surface meteorological network, the Wunderground experience

John J. Celenza, Weather Underground, Inc., San Francisco, CA; and A. B. Cowdin and R. W. Carver

Over several years, we have developed a network of weather station

owned by our user community. The station owners upload their data to

us, which we then archive and display to the general public via web

applications. Without centralized planning, this network has grown to

cover most of the US and is starting to develop a global presence.

Developing an ingest/archival system that can accomodate a large

number of rapidly updating observations has been an interesting

technical challenge. Since the network is composed of heterogenous

hardware sited using different approaches, this poses special issues

for quality control. In this paper we will discuss how we addressed

these challenges and also the lessons learned in working with our

community of station owners.
