El Niño signal in American midwest precipitation

Cécile Penland, NOAA/ESRL, Boulder, CO; and L. E. Matrosova

A non-normal filter is used to isolate the El Nino signal in tropical south Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). In boreal fall, the resulting index is significantly anticorrelated with precipitation in the American Midwest two to three seasons later. We discuss the physical mechanisms for this strong anti-correlation.
