TC-IDV — A New Tool for Tropical Cyclone Forecasting and Research

Yuan Ho, Unidata/UCAR, Boulder, CO; and J. McWhirter, D. Murray, X. Liang, X. Lu, and Y. Yin

The Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) is a Java(TM)-based software framework for analyzing and visualizing geo-science data. The newly developed Tropical Cyclone version of IDV (TC-IDV) provides an integrated system for tropical cyclone research and operational application. This system is being jointly developed by the Unidata Program Center and the Shanghai Tropical Institute. The TC-IDV includes capabilities to visualize tropical cyclone tracks from multiple forecasting ways (e.g., models, forecast centers), to compare the position and intensity among the different forecasting ways, and to integrate this information with other types of data (satellite, radar, model, etc). A hurricane case study from the 2008 season will be shown to demonstrate the detailed functionality of TC-IDV.
