Google Earth: The power of the GeoWeb and the road ahead

Peter Birch, Google Earth, Mountain View, CA; and M. Jones

Google Earth is changing the way people communicate and exchange information. With over 400 million downloads of Google Earth in 2008, and 250 million downloads in 2007, geospatial browser usage is gaining in popularity but still lags behind email and text messaging as the conduit of choice. Google continues to develop and release user-oriented geospatial applications for the connected user environment, and is exploring new opportunities in portable communications. Google Earth will continue to enhance strategies for information delivery and management for everyone across the weather and climate community. New capabilities of Google Earth will be demonstrated and a vision of the road ahead for Google Earth will be revealed.
