Metop-A status and recent achievements
Johannes Schmetz, EUMETSAT, Darmstadt, Germany; and K. D. Klaes, P. Schlüssel, and K. Holmlund
The presentation will provide an update on the status of the Metop-A satellite and the instruments with emphasis on their successful utilization. The suite of products from instruments on Metop is fully operational and positive impact on forecasting with numerical weather prediction models has been demonstrated. For instance a good early impact from IASI data (clear radiances only) was demonstrated. Over and above the ongoing improvement to products, e.g. retrievals of thermodynamic profiles, surface winds through improved calibration, a first set of new products from Metop has been developed. Those include a soil moisture product from the advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) and atmospheric motion vectors over polar regions from AVHRR. The latter product is being developed in close cooperation with NOAA; as a novel feature of this wind product an improved height assignment using IASI observation is being considered. The talk concludes with a view to the status of preparations for Metop-B and –C and the ongoing development toward the polar satellite system beyond Metop (Post-EPS); the latter is done in close collaboration and coordination with NOAA.
