The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Preparatory Project (NPP) Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) team is currently executing pre-launch activities and planning post-launch activities to efficiently integrate the NPOESS Sensor Data Records (SDRs) and Environmental Data Records (EDRs) into Customer applications to reduce risk in achieving NPOESS Mission Success. The NPP Cal/Val Team, led by the Integrated Program Office (IPO), includes members from the Contractor team producing the data products and subject matter experts from the Customer and User communities to bring together the expertise with the production algorithms, product use, and science community. The objectives of the NPP Cal/Val effort are to accomplish the capabilities for which the NPP Program was funded, or ensure operational product viability and provide independent verification of Northrop Grumman Space Technology (NGST) results, and facilitate the fullest possible exploitation of the unique data provided by supporting data integration for mission systems and supporting the user community. The latter objectives are achieved by providing Cal/Val beyond basic contractual compliance to facilitate acceptability of data products to primary operational systems and act as liaison between NGST and the operational community to coordinate and approve product updates as required. This presentation will highlight how the Cal/Val program activities will support this goal through inclusion of operational customers in pre-launch algorithm verification and operational data requirement clarification and post-launch validation in specific areas and conditions.
