Aviation, Range and Aerospace Meteorology Special Symposium on Weather-Air Traffic Management Integration

1.1

REDAC weather – ATM integration study

William S. Leber, Northwest Airlines, Minneapolis, MN

In late 2007, the recommendations of the Weather - ATM Integration Working Group (WAIWG) of the National Airspace System Operations (NAS OPS) Subcommittee, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Research, Engineering and Development Advisory Committee (REDAC) were published in a well-received report. This invited speech will review the WAIWG report as a kick-off for our 1-day symposium. The WAIWG found that as much as two-thirds of the weather-related delay is potentially avoidable, and that a risk management approach with adaptive, incremental decision making, based on automatically translating weather forecasts into air traffic impacts, presents a major new opportunity for reducing weather related delays in the future NAS. Their key recommendation is that a cross-cutting research program, involving public and private sector air traffic management and aviation weather experts, is needed to exploit these key findings.
