Assesment of Computer Technology in West Cental Illinois Elementary Schools

Today many students are being left behind in their exposure to technology. As computers are now a necessity in continuing education and in the professional world, it is essential that elementary school students are exposed to technology and become comfortable with computers at an early age. This exposure to computers provides the building blocks for interest in scientific fields, such as meteorology. This study encompasses rural schools in the west central Illinois area. Three meteorology students' contacts school officials to determine the level of computer technology at each school. Level of computer technology in this study is defined as the quantity of computers as well as average age of computers. The level of computer technology in each of the elementary schools was then compared to scores on the Illinois Standardized Achievement Test administered in the 3rd grade (Reading, Mathematics and Writing) and 4th grade (Reading, Mathematics and Science). The level of computer technology was also compared to local community census data, such as mean income and education. It is hoped that the project will be expanded in the future to include middle and high schools.
