Assessment of objective satellite-based techniques as viable alternatives to subjective dvorak
Hall 5 (Phoenix Convention Center)
The Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB) of NOAA/NESDIS has provided tropical cyclone intensity estimates using the Dvorak technique for over 30 years. With advances in technology, both in satellite information and computing speed, new automated objective intensity estimation techniques have been developed and have become comparable to subjective Dvorak estimates produced in an operational setting.
Results of homogeneous comparisons of SAB's subjective Dvorak estimates with CIMSS and CIRA objective AMSU estimates, CIMSS Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) estimates and a combination of these objective estimates as an ensemble product dubbed Satellite Consensus (SATCON) by CIMSS will be shown.
