AWIPS II Technology Infusion is a multi-phase project to develop a robust and extensible system to support the entire NWS enterprise mission needs. The first phase of this project is migration of the existing AWIPS functionality for the Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) and River Forecast Centers (RFCs) to the AWIPS II architecture. AWIPS-II employs a modern Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and is written primarily in the Java programming language. The migration is being conducted by Raytheon Technical Services Company (RTS) under the direction of the NWS Office of Science and Technology (OST) and is expected to be complete in 2009 with deployment targeted for 2010.
The second major phase of AWIPS II Technology Infusion, hereafter referred to as AWIPS-II Extended, includes several projects to broaden AWIPS II to address the entire NWS enterprise. AWIPS II Extended includes the migration of the National Centers AWIPS (N-AWIPS) applications to AWIPS II, an AWIPS II integrated thin client capability, an AWIPS II integrated Weather Event Simulator (WES) capability and the incorporation of the Community Hydrologic Prediction System (CHPS) into AWIPS II. AWIPS II Extended also includes projects that provide major system-wide enhancements to the AWIPS II data delivery, collaboration, information generation, and visualization capabilities.
This paper reports on the current progress of the migration to the new architecture and provides a description of the AWIPS II Extended projects and their respective plans and status.
