GOES-R Improvements for Climate Monitoring
Room 224AB (Phoenix Convention Center)
Mitchell Goldberg, NOAA/NESDIS, Camp Springs, MD
The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) of the geostationary GOES-R series will provide unprecedented spatial and temporal coverage of essential climate variables, including temperature, water vapor, cloud properties, ozone, aerosols, atmospheric winds, and sea surface temperature. Two operational satellites will provide coverage over most of the western hemisphere. Spatial resolutions of 2 km and full disk temporal resolution capable of 5 minutes will allow monitoring changes in the diurnal cycle due to climate and land cover change. Coupled with polar orbiting satellites, the geostationary GOES-R ABI will provide added information on climate change, particularly in the regional and temporal domain. The main advantage of geostationary orbit is the high refresh rate of Earth observations at the same viewing geometry, thereby allowing for detail and accurate assessment of regional and diurnal change. Details of the ABI products with respect to climate applications will be presented.
