Comparison of TRMM radar rainfall estimates with NOAA Next Generation QPE in high-impact hydrometeorological events
Room 127C (Phoenix Convention Center)
Rainfall rate fields based on the TRMM spaceborne radar observations are compared to those based on the new NOAA Next Generation QPE high-resolution national mosaic product (Q2). These rainfall fields can be considered as radar products with the largest coverage currently available from space and ground-based radar observations. They probably can also be considered as the most advanced radar rainfall rate products over a large area. How well do these two products agree in general and in high-impact hydrometeorological events, in particular? Results from the comparisons between the two advanced products will be presented. Among the events which will be addressed are: Hurricane Humberto on Sept 13, 2007; tornadic thunderstorms on Feb. 6, 2008 which is considered as the deadliest tornado outbreak of the modern NEXRAD Doppler radar era associated with 84 tornadoes occurrences over the course of the outbreak; and the May 11, 2008 tornadic thunderstorms in which a tornado was reported at the exact time of the TRMM overpass directly at nadir. The comparison is based on comparing the satellite and the ground radar instantaneous rain rate pdfs. Very large discrepancies are found in some of the events.
