NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and Office of Program Planning and Integration (PPI) have partnered to develop a new NOAA-wide Economics web site [www.economics.noaa.gov]. This Web site is a “one-stop” source of information on the economic value and real-world application of NOAA's data products in decision-making and the economic costs of environmental extreme events to society. The information provided is synthesized from over 150 sources of peer-reviewed literature and organized by NOAA mission goal (i.e., Climate, Weather & Water, Ecosystems, and Commerce & Transportation). Each goal is further broken down to provide information based on data users (e.g., business sectors, general public, Federal agencies); environmental extreme events (e.g., hurricanes, space weather, drought, coral bleaching); and NOAA observing systems (e.g., land, marine, satellite, upper air). The Web site, intended for a general target audience, provides a clear, concise explanation of NOAA's value to society in easy to understand language. Anticipated users include the general public, media, educators, Congressional staffers and NOAA personnel.
