With funding from the Joint Fire Science Program and the National Fire Plan, rapid response field observations of smoke were made during the past four summers. Meteorological and air quality data collected during the Frank Church (2005), Tripod (2006), Montana and Idaho (2007), and Northern California (2008) fires are presented. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) sampling sites were setup in an array downstream of the active fires in order to characterize the location and extent of the smoke plumes and to determine downwind surface concentrations. The observations from these efforts are presented.
