National Unified Operational Prediction Capability: Progress and National Research Intiatives

Fred Toepfer, NOAA/NWS, Silver Springs, MD; and D. McCarren and S. A. Sandgathe

The National Unified Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC) is a joint Department of Commerce and Department of Defense initiative to advance the national NWP capability in response to evolving operational needs. Central to the goals of the program is an effort to standardize NWP practices in order to accelerate model development and achieve developmental and operational efficiencies for the next generation of NWP systems. Over the past year, interim committees with wide community representation have met to define software interoperability standards, and outreach needs. They have also undertaken the effort to define a national research and development agenda for improved global NWP in the US, especially global ensemble prediction. NUOPC management will report progress in these efforts as well as review recent initiatives in global ensemble prediction.
