Development of web-based GIS applications for decision support and situational awareness
Brian P. Walawender, NOAA/NWS, Kansas City, MO; and M. W. Davis
ABSTRACT The advent of client-side web mapping technologies (e.g., OpenLayers, GoogleMaps) has provided platforms for creating easy to use GIS displays. In August 2008, the National Weather Service Central Region Headquarters created a test bed for developing web-based GIS applications, using the OpenGeo Stack (i.e., Postgresql/PostGIS, Geoserver and Openlayers). The primary focus of these applications was visualizing meteorological and hydrological data for decision support and situational awareness. The applications developed and the lessons learned from this test bed will be highlighted in this presentation.
