Investigation of land surface process over the ARM SGP in 1997 summer using a single-column model

This study evaluates the land-atmosphere interaction using various land surface models (LSMs). Selected schemes are the two versions of Oregon State University (OSU) LSM, Noah LSM, and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) LSM. To investigate the characteristics of the land surface process, four LSMs will be examined in the framework of off- and on-line experiments using a Single-Column Model (SCM) driven by the Intensive Observation Period dataset over the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains data for 1997 summer as an atmosphere forcing. In addition, the LSM sensitivity to different surface parameters is also examined.

From the preliminary results, it is found the simulated surface temperature, latent and sensible heat flux exhibit ranges of 2.3 K, 49 W m-2 and 65 W m-2, respectively across LSMs in the on-line tests, which are much larger than those in the off-line tests. The OSU1 (VIC1)-related experiments shows highest (lowest) values of sensible heat flux among LSMs in both off- and on-line tests. OSU2 and NOAH show similar each other. The partitioning among the surface heat fluxes and evapotranspiration is variable depending on not only LSMs but also surface parameters.
