Census of Private Sector Meteorology

Gale F. Hoffnagle, NCIM, Windsor, CT

The number of people employed by the private meteorological enterprise and the size of the business are virtually unknown. There are indications that the personnel may excede 6,500 but little is known about the broad scale of the business. The things that are known will be presented, including the rough estimate that this is an 8 billion dollar business.

The National Council of Industrial Meteorology (NCIM) has embarked on a census of the business. The mechanisms and preliminary results of the census are to be presented.

The Meteorological Enterprise and the National Weather Service need to know as much as possible about he size of private sector meteorology.
