Weather's impact on the golf industry

Dennis M. O'Donnell Jr., Weather Trends International, Bethlehem, PA

Subjective analysis of the impact of weather on the golf industry has been done by course owners for years, but putting quantitative numbers to these thoughts has been difficult. Golf course rounds played data from across the country will be referenced with typical meteorological variables to quantify the weather impact on the industry. Retail sales data will also be used to further describe how weather impacts golfers spending habits. Precipitation is the most important variable to influence golf course use but, depending on the time of year, temperature can allow courses to capitalize during the “off-season”.
